Mixed martial arts have been used for years as an effective form of self-defense. It combines different martial arts, in essence giving you the best of each one when you are in a survival situation. Mixed martial arts are actually a type of combat sport, made to place different opponents against each other, each with their own style of martial arts. Most of the styles used are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and submission wrestling. They also use techniques such as striking and grappling.
Some of the styles used in mixed martial arts for self-defense are:
1. Ground- These are things like shoot wrestling, Judo, Sambo, catch wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. These styles are learned to grow the person’s ability to control on the ground and also to be able to make effective submission holds against their attackers.

2. Clinch- These are styles such as Greco-Roman wrestling, Sambo, Judo, and Freestyle. They are taught to grow the person’s takedowns, clinching, and throws, and Muay Thai is taught to allow the person the ability to make better use of the strike of the clinch.

3. Stand up- This is boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and other contact karate that aids in footwork, kicking, elbowing, punching, and kneeing.

Many times, people that wish to learn mixed martial arts will train with more than one teacher, and have training that is done in various sections, to get benefit from all of the martial arts.
When you learn many different martial arts, like MMA, you can be better prepared to deal with all of the various types of violence that can happen, and be able to react quickly.

Muay Thai is used when training for mixed martial arts self defense, and it is a martial art that involves striking. It uses the feet, hands, knees and elbows to overpower an attacker. Learning this martial art will give you great weapons in an attack. By learning how to kick effectively, you can take down an attacker quickly. You can knock a person out by using a round kick to the head. If you are close to your attacker, you can use things like your elbows and knees to extract yourself from someone attempting to harm you. You will also learn how to defend yourself when you are being hit. You are instructed how to defend yourself from many various weapons so that you are prepared for anything.

Keep in mind that if you choose to learn mixed martial arts for self-defense, there is a great amount of time and effort that must go into martial arts training, as it is not an overnight thing. People sometimes train for years before being ready to use their skills. If you have the endurance to see it through, then mixed martial arts can be an excellent choice for self-defense. It takes a superior level of discipline and commitment, but the results are well worth it. Before you decide to give mixed martial arts a try, be certain that you are prepared for what you have to put into it to see the results you are wanting.
